Parent/Guardian Teaching Writing Workshop

Teaching writing can be one of the most rewarding parts of homeschooling, but the very things that make it exciting can also make it overwhelming.

In this series of workshops, parents/guardians will work through a combination of theoretical and practical approaches. By the end, they'll have critical tools to teaching writing in a way that's grounded in research and principles of respect for their learners' work.

Session 1: The Believing and Doubting Game- Learn how we can use the framework of belief and doubt coined by rhetoric scholar Peter Elbow to give meaningful, supportive, and trust-building feedback to writers.

Session 2: The Reading-Writing Connection (Writing is Easier When You Have Something to Say)- There's a pedagogical history of separating reading and writing instruction, but it was built to serve standardized testing — not learners. Here's how we put the two back together.

Session 3: Pairing Texts for Deeper Learning- Now that you know more about how to combine reading and writing, let's talk about some specific ways to create rich contexts for getting amazing writing by pairing texts.

Session 4: The Anatomy of a Writing Prompt- You're ready to build writing assignments that will provide the right balance of expectations and freedom, and this workshop will show you how to do it!

FAQs

What if I need to miss a class?

No problem! There are summary videos for lecture content, and class materials are posted on Teachable so you can stay caught up.

What age learners should I have to make the most of this class?

Good question! While teaching writing begins even before your learner can hold a pencil, this series of workshops focuses mostly on middle and high school strategies. Parents/guardians with learners in or approaching those ages will get the most out of the workshops.

Do I have to purchase your curriculum to use these strategies?

Definitely not! These discussions about about how to plan writing lessons around meaningful content and give feedback with purpose. While I do use these strategies when designing my own curriculum, these workshops are designed to help you create your own or adapt whatever materials you already have.

What if I have other questions?

Send me an email at [email protected] or connect on Facebook. I'd be happy to answer any questions you have!
